Mexico High Tech

Powered by more than 3,000 companies providing advanced services, such as electronics design and manufacturing, ITO/BPO services, software and multimedia development, Mexico has earned global recognition as one of the most important technological clusters.

Electronics manufacturing

Acting as the cornerstone of the Mexican high tech ecosystem, the electronics industry gathers more than 700 manufacturing companies and 340,000 employees. Together, they exported 59,607 million dollars n 2009 and represented 1,161 million dollars of investment.

There are four main concentrations of manufacturing companies across the country, serving different sectors. In the US border zone, two clusters focus mainly on audio, video, telecommunications and automotive electronics, while the central region is dedicated to home appliances and consumer electronics.

But without a doubt, the most important electronics cluster is located in the Western region, lead by Jalisco, where hundreds of companies work together to manufacture high-tech electronics, telecommunications equipment, IT and electronics sub-assemblies, among others.

Information Technology

The UN ranks Mexico as the top Latin American country in terms of technological achievement, defining it as a potential leader in a poll of over 90 countries. Several multinational companies such as HP, IBM, Sun Microsystems and EDS, have identified Mexico as an attractive market for the sale of their products and services.

Not only have they maintained and increased their presence in Mexico, but they have also expanded their activities towards software and IT services development to service domestic and external markets.

There is an especially high offering of IT services in Mexico. Up to 90% of the domestic IT services demand – close to 3 billion US dollars - is satisfied by domestic companies.

Mexican outsourcing services, offered on an offshore or nearshore basis, began satisfying customer needs over a decade ago; among these are leading Fortune 500 companies such as GE and HP.

Mexico has more than 2,000 IT companies located throughout the country, focusing on integration and development services; software and hardware maintenance and support; consulting services; applications development for client interfacing (CRM2); operations support and link-up with suppliers (ERP, SCM3); applications development and middleware.

Mexico has the necessary tools and expertise to develop IT services. Most of the companies focus their products and services on four main sectors: financial services, manufacturing, telecommunications and government agencies.

Synergy is, without a doubt, a strong value for the Mexican IT industry. Dozens of IT clusters and IT integrators gather hundreds of companies, in order to combine capacities and enhance their competitiveness in the local and international market.

Currently, there are 17 IT integrators (groups of companies who decide to constitute a new representative company), located in 11 States throughout the country. On the other hand, there are 22 IT clusters (groups of companies who establish a civil organization representing them) in 20 States, bringing together more than 700 companies.

Given the great potential and the impact generated by IT services in local economies and other sectors, these are now a strategic part of Mexico’s economic development as acknowledged by the Mexican Government in its National Development Plan.

The IT sector is not only important because of its potential growth but also because of its qualitative influence in all the other productive sectors, optimizing their processes and enabling them to be more reliable.

As a result, the Mexican Ministry of Economy, in conjunction with the academic, public and private sectors, set in motion two strategies to achieve sustainable economic growth: the Program for the Development of the Software Industry (PROSOFT) and, more recently, the Program for the Development of the Interactive Media Industry (Promedia).
